Luxury silk robes for her and how to choose the right one
The best luxury silk robe for her is 100 percent mulberry silk at 19 to 22 momme, with French seams and a length that suits how she lives. Expect to pay a few hundred dollars for real silk. Our robes run $245 to $395 and arrive in a silk gift box.
A silk robe is one of the few gifts that gets worn almost every day. It is also one of the easiest to get wrong, because most robes sold as "silk" are polyester satin, and the price gap between the two is large enough that you should know which one you are paying for. This edit is written for someone buying for a wife, partner, mother or bride, who wants the real thing and does not want to guess at sizes.
If you already know what you want, the shortcut is our silk robes collection: three mulberry silk robes in short, mid-length and floor length, from $245.
How much does a silk robe cost?
A real mulberry silk robe usually costs a few hundred dollars, and couture houses charge several thousand. Robes listed under $50 are almost always polyester satin. The price follows the weight of the silk (momme), the length of the robe, which uses more fabric, and the finishing inside.
| What you are buying | Typical fabric | Rough price | What she will notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Silk" satin robe at a mass retailer | Polyester satin | Under $50 | Shiny, warm to wear, snags and creases |
| Mid weight mulberry silk robe | 16 to 19 momme silk | A few hundred dollars | Cool, light, soft glow, drapes from the shoulder |
| Heavy mulberry silk robe | 22 momme silk and up | From the upper hundreds | More body and warmth, opaque, glows in low light |
| Couture and heritage houses | Silk, often lined | Thousands (Loro Piana lists a silk robe at $4,140) | The name, the tailoring and the boutique |
For reference, our Vestaglia Capri short robe is 19 momme mulberry silk at $265, the Kimono Amalfi is 22 momme with lace cuffs at $345, and the floor length Vestaglia Lunga Portofino is 22 momme at $395.
How to tell real silk from satin before you pay
Satin is a weave, not a fiber, so a "satin silk robe" can be anything. Read the composition line, not the product name. Three things separate a robe she will keep for years from one she will quietly stop wearing.
- The label says 100 percent mulberry silk. Mulberry silk comes from cultivated silkworms fed on mulberry leaves, which gives long, even fibers that are smoother and stronger than wild silk. "Silky", "silk feel" and "satin" on their own mean polyester.
- A momme weight is stated. Momme is silk's weight per area. 19 momme is light and fluid, good for a short robe. 22 momme is heavier, more opaque and has a deeper glow. A seller who does not state momme usually has a reason.
- The seams are finished. French seams enclose the raw edge inside a second fold, so the robe has no scratchy overlocking and does not fray after washing. Turn the sleeve inside out in the photos if you can.
Real silk also feels cool on first touch and warms quickly against skin. Polyester stays slightly slick and holds heat, which is why cheap robes feel clammy after an hour.
Short, mid-length or long
Length decides whether the robe becomes her everyday piece or her occasion piece. If you do not know her preference, think about how she spends a morning.
- Short, above the knee. The robe she will reach for daily, over pajamas or after a shower, easy on stairs and in warm climates. The Capri comes in black, champagne and powder pink.
- Mid-calf kimono. Wide sleeves and a straight front, so it layers over a slip or a lace set without crowding. A good pick for someone who likes color: the Amalfi is deep emerald or midnight blue.
- Floor length. The glamorous one, for slow weekends, hotel stays and anniversaries. It photographs beautifully and feels like an evening gown. The Portofino is black or ivory with a piped shawl collar.
Shorter women (around 5 feet 2 and under) often find a floor length robe pools at the feet. That looks lovely in a photo but is less practical day to day, so the mid-length kimono is the safer choice.
Getting her size right without asking
This is where most gift buyers hesitate, and where robes are kinder than lingerie. Our robes come in two sizes. S/M fits US sizes 0 to 10 and L/XL fits 12 to 16, both cut with room in the shoulder. If she is between sizes, or you are unsure, choose the larger one. A robe that is a little generous looks relaxed and intentional, while a robe that pulls across the back looks like a mistake.
A quiet way to check is the tag on a dress or coat she wears often. If it says 10 or 12, go L/XL. If you still get it wrong, every order includes one free size exchange under our Fit Promise, and unworn robes can be returned within 30 days. Our size guide has the shoulder and length measurements for each style.
Choosing a color she will actually wear
Look at what she already wears to sleep and lounge in, and at her bedroom. Neutral rooms suit champagne, ivory or black. Rich, dark interiors suit emerald and midnight blue. If you are not sure what to call her taste, browsing interior design inspiration sorted by style is a quick way to put a name to it before choosing between a soft neutral and a jewel tone. When in doubt, black goes with everything she owns, and champagne is soft enough to flatter most skin tones.
Matching the robe to the occasion
| Occasion | Our pick | Add for a set |
|---|---|---|
| Anniversary | Portofino long robe in black, $395 | Luna silk chemise, $195 |
| Birthday or Mother's Day | Capri short robe in champagne, $265 | Nothing else needed |
| Valentine's Day | Amalfi kimono in emerald, $345 | A lace lingerie set from $185 |
| Bride or bridal shower | Mattina bridal silk robe in ivory, $245 | See the silk bridal robe page |
| Honeymoon | Capri short robe, packs light | Perla silk negligee, $225 |
A robe and a matching chemise in the same silk is the most generous version of this gift and still sits under $600. If you are buying for a bride, our silk bridal robe for getting ready covers timing, color and what to wear underneath.
How it arrives
Every Seduttrice order ships in a plain outer box with a silk gift box inside, so it can be left with a doorman or a neighbor without giving anything away. You can add a handwritten gift note in the bag, and no prices go in the parcel. Shipping within the US is express, 2 to 4 business days, and free from $150, which every robe clears. For a dated occasion, order at least a week ahead to leave room for a size exchange.
Silk care is simple, and worth passing on with the gift: hand wash cold with a silk detergent or dry clean, never wring, dry flat in the shade. Our guide on how to care for silk has the details. More gift ideas, including pieces from $45, are on the lingerie gifts page.
Questions
Is a silk robe a good gift?
Yes. A silk robe is one of the most worn gifts because it fits loosely, so size is forgiving, and it is used every day rather than saved for occasions. Choose 100 percent mulberry silk so it lasts and feels noticeably better than satin.
What size robe should I buy for my wife?
Go by her dress size. For our robes, S/M fits US 0 to 10 and L/XL fits 12 to 16. If you are unsure, choose the larger size, because a generous robe looks relaxed. One free size exchange is included.
Is mulberry silk worth the price?
For a robe she will wear daily, yes. Mulberry silk is cooler, softer and more breathable than polyester satin, and with gentle care a 19 to 22 momme robe keeps its drape and glow for many years.
Can a silk robe be machine washed?
We recommend hand washing in cold water with a silk detergent, or dry cleaning. Never wring the silk and dry it flat in the shade. Steam on low to remove creases.
