Which silk bridal piece do you need
Silk does a different job at each point of the wedding day, so most brides buy one or two pieces rather than a full wardrobe. This is how our silk bridal lingerie lines up.
| Piece | Price | Colours | When you wear it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mattina bridal silk robe | $245 | Ivory, champagne | Hair, make-up and getting ready photos |
| Camicia da Notte Perla negligee | $225 | Ivory, black | Wedding night, ankle length with a low back |
| Sottoveste Luna silk chemise | $195 | Champagne, black, powder pink | Wedding night or honeymoon, above the knee |
| Seta Ombra silk bodysuit | $245 | Champagne, black | The night, or as a top for the honeymoon dinner |
| Portofino long silk robe | $395 | Ivory, black | Slow mornings after the wedding, hotel breakfasts |
The pairing we sell most is the Mattina robe with the Perla negligee, both in ivory, at $470 for the two. The robe covers the morning, the negligee the night, and they match in every photo where both appear.
Silk wedding lingerie for the getting ready hour
The getting ready hour is where silk earns its place. Your photographer will shoot the robe more than anything else you wear before the dress, and a polyester satin robe shows every crease and shines under flash. Mulberry silk has a softer, lower sheen and falls in clean folds, which is why it looks expensive in pictures.
The Mattina is short, in 19 momme mulberry silk, with sheer lace sleeves and wide lapels so hair and make-up stay clear and you can step out of it without touching your face. It ties with a self belt, so it opens easily when the dress goes on. Our silk bridal robe page compares it with the floor length Portofino if you prefer a longer line, and covers how to coordinate robes for a bridal party.
Silk bridal lingerie for the wedding night
For the night, choose between length and ease. The Camicia da Notte Perla is bias cut mulberry silk that pools at the ankle, with lace at the bust and a low scooped back, the most traditional bridal look we make. The Sottoveste Luna is a bias cut chemise that falls just above the knee, with a lace V neckline and fine adjustable straps. It is lighter, packs smaller and comes in champagne, a shade many brides prefer to ivory for the night.
If you want something that feels more like lingerie than nightwear, the Seta Ombra pairs a lace bodice with a mulberry silk body and a snap gusset. More ideas, including lace pieces, are on our wedding night lingerie page.
Is silk right under the wedding dress
Honestly, usually not. A silk chemise or slip adds a layer of fabric under a gown that already has a lining, and silk can cling to a crepe or satin skirt. Under the dress, most brides are better served by fine lace that lies flat: the Sposa ivory lace set with its low back convertible bra, the white lace bodysuit for a fitted sheath, or the bridal bustier for a strapless gown. Keep the silk for before and after.
The exception is a slip dress or a very simple silk gown with no lining. There, a bodysuit in a shade close to your skin can work. Bring it to your fitting and let your seamstress decide.
Silk bridal lingerie as a gift
Silk is the easiest bridal lingerie to give, because robes come in only two sizes and chemises are cut loose enough to forgive half a size. Maids of honor often give the Mattina robe at the shower, and a mother of the bride the Portofino for the honeymoon. Everything ships in a silk lined gift box with no prices on the slip. Our lingerie bridal shower gifts guide sorts the options by budget.
Sizing, care and delivery
Robes come in S/M (US 0 to 10) and L/XL (US 12 to 16). The negligee, chemise and bodysuit follow letter sizes XS to XL, US 0 to 16; for the bodysuit go up a size if you have a long torso. Our size guide lists the measurements. Mulberry silk keeps for years if you hand wash it cold with a silk detergent and dry it flat away from sun, which our silk care guide explains step by step. Orders ship express within the US in 2 to 4 business days, free from $150. The Fit Promise covers one free size exchange on your first order, and unworn pieces with tags can be returned within 30 days. Order four to six weeks before the wedding to leave room for an exchange. The whole edit is on the bridal lingerie page and every silk piece is in silk lingerie.
Questions about silk bridal lingerie and silk wedding lingerie
Is silk good for bridal lingerie?
Yes, for the robe you get ready in and for wedding night pieces. Mulberry silk breathes on a warm day, photographs with a soft sheen and drapes without clinging. Under the gown itself, fine lace that lies flat is usually the better choice.
What is the difference between silk and satin bridal lingerie?
Silk is a natural fibre, while satin is a weave usually made from polyester. Polyester satin is cheaper but feels warm, holds static and shines under a camera flash. Mulberry silk is cooler, softer and has a lower sheen, which is why it looks better in getting ready photos.
What should a bride wear the night of the wedding?
Most brides change into something softer than what they wore under the gown: a silk negligee or chemise, a lace bodysuit, or the lace set from the day with a robe over it. Ivory is traditional, and champagne is a popular alternative.
What color silk robe should a bride wear?
Ivory if your gown is ivory or white, champagne if your gown is champagne or blush. Bright white silk often looks blue in photos next to an ivory dress. Bridesmaids often wear champagne or blush so the bride stands out.
How much does silk bridal lingerie cost?
Real mulberry silk bridal lingerie usually costs $150 to $450 a piece. Ours runs from $195 for the Sottoveste Luna chemise to $395 for the floor length Portofino robe, with free express US shipping from $150.
How far in advance should I buy wedding lingerie?
Four to six weeks before the wedding, and before your second dress fitting for anything you wear under the gown. That leaves time for a size exchange and for alterations made over the pieces you will actually wear.
